Pollution Prevention and Reduction is a general term categorizing multiple programs within the Little Alamance Creek watershed that are designed with the overall goals of reducing environmental impacts, preventing water quality risks, and decreasing program costs. Our programs include Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination, Erosion and Sediment Control, Post Construction Management, Collection System Improvements, Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping, and Retrofits. Each of these programs has specific components that contribute to the overall goal of environmental protection and water quality improvements.
Some of these components include identifying various target pollutants and their potential sources and then mitigating any issues found, as well as general education and knowledge of stormwater rules, regulations, and best management practices. Pollution prevention and reduction is the backbone of reducing today’s water pollution while Community Engagement is the backbone of reducing tomorrow’s water pollution. Despite it’s broad category of programs, Pollution Prevention and Reduction incorporates municipal staff, private businesses, and the general public to help monitor and improve our water quality.
